Hi everyone!^^

This year at the upcoming AWA I'm hoping to crossplay as Flandre Scarlet (My avvy picture), and was wondering if anyone had any ideas to help with her wings. Figured I could use painted foam cut into shape of the crystals, and then cover a metal set up to get it, but this is the first time I've ever done something like this. Would like to know if there is an alternative before I cut holes in my outfit, or if someone could help with the set up. Kinda going trial-by-fire now, just running with what I've got.

Any help is massively appreciated, by both me and my costume!

Interesting design..... Uhm, yeah, the crystals can be made of foam, painted and then glossed up a bit. For the black bits, I would use two bits of foam sandwiching a length of metal or dowel for strength purposes.

All of this can be hooked to a rudimentary harness similar to a backpack minus the pouch (go to a thrift store, buy a bag, rip off the bag part and use the back pad plus the straps.

Find a way to hook the wings to that, and wear it under the costume.

Not EASY, but certainly not the hardest thing to make.

Geh, pc trouble. >.<

Thanks! Just about finished with the wings now. Need to grab some foam from the hobby store and work on the crystals next. Though last time I got some it felt kinda grainy. If I painted over that, would it be at risk of chipping off?

Depends on the kind of foam. What I use is insulation foam from Lowes (or other hardware store), the blue kind. It tends to maintain its shape the best, and offers good durability. It can also be carved like wood.

Hobby store foam will chip a bit, so what you might want to do if you use that is to paint a layer of modge podge or just elmers glue over the first bit, and then paint. Be aware that you cannot spray paint it (if you did not already know that) as it will melt.

Blue foam (insulation) does this too.

I recommend blue foam as it is available for roughly 10 bucks for a 4X7 foot sheet. Which should be almost all you would need. Theatre companies use that kind of foam as props material all the time.

I normally use the blue insulation foam for making swords. I cover it in paper-mache, it's a little more durable & you can spray paint it.

Another option would be to use Wonderflex. It's easy to shape & has decent duability.

Wonderflex is nice, but can be quite expensive in quantities large enough to make those wing crystal thingies.
